The Steamrock MT-11 Precision Moon Tracker provides a very clear and simple visual depiction of the moon phases, moonlight availability at night, estimated times of that availability, and moon eclipse information. This should be useful for fishing, nighttime navigation planning, and roughly estimating tides.
The moon status is calculated every minute and is displayed on a high-contrast, sun-readable e-paper display as follows:
- Current percentage of the moon illuminated, regardless of whether it is visible in the sky
- The current shape of the moon in the chosen hemisphere, not adjusting for changes associated with latitude
- The approximate timing of the relative height of the moon above the horizon over the night
- The 28-day Moon Calendar depicting the average shape of the moon on that day, along with the relative height of the moon above the horizon over the night, for each date
- The chosen time zone and the corresponding time and date
The Steamrock MT-11 is a standalone device that does not require software updates, an internet connection, or an external power supply. It operates on three AA batteries, with the remaining charge displayed using a battery icon and percentage.
The device calculates the moon status data internally, not retrieving it from an external source. These calculations are complex and inevitably involve a slight amount of rounding. However, the results are quite accurate, typically within a minute.
